What is Sepak Takraw

Sepak takraw, which is called Takraw for short, is a sport famous in Southeast Asia, especially in countries like Malaysia and Indonesia. The game play is similar to a combination of volleyball and football. The rules are similar to volleyball but it is played like football without using the hands. Only three touches are allowed per team to send the ball to the opponent’s court. But in this game, the player is allowed to take all three touches or share it with the team. The ball is called a rattan ball, which is made of plastic fiber or straws.

The size of the court is similar in size to the badminton court. The court is designed in a way that it has a circle in the middle of each side.

There are two semi-circles drawn around the posts. The game consists of 3 players each on either side. The players have positions named Deccan, supplier and striker. Deccan is the player who serves the ball. Supplier is similar to the booster in volleyball. Striker is the attacker. Deccan stands inside the circle before he serves. The other two players stand inside the half semi-circles.

There are 4 different categories in this sport:
1. Team event
2. Regu event
3. Doubles
4. Hoop takraw

1. Team event:
In team event, we have 15 players with 9 main players and 6 substitutes. 9 main players form 3 teams consisting of 3 players each. Each team must play the best of three sets. Each set consists of 21 points. In order to win a game a side has to win two out of 3 teams it enrolls. Substitutes are used as an element of surprise. They could be used at anytime during the game but only in one sub team. Once used, the player can't play in another team. Substitutes are played wisely to change the fortunes of the game.

2. Regu event:
In the regu event a team consists of 5 players with two substitutes. Mostly, they are the best 5 players of a side or regu specialists. The rules and play are the same but they need to win just 2 out of 3 sets similar to a sub team game.

3. Doubles:
In doubles, the team consists of 3 players with one substitute. Only 2 players play are allowed on the field. There are a few changes in game play but the rules are mostly the same. Service is hit from outside the court. The rest of the game play is the same.

4. Hoop takraw:
The game is entirely different when compared to other takraw games. It is similar to basketball but the points differ with different levels of toughness by which the players send the ball to drop inside the hoop.
