For it to be truly successful, here are some important consideration when you’re planning to have an outdoor teambuilding activity:
- Climate, washrooms, parking spaces, security, accessibility, package rates and inclusions are some of the things that must be available before you consider the place for your company activities. It is important that you do an ocular inspection to check the facilities and the venue itself.
- Because the activities are outdoors everyone should be able to adapt particularly the facilitator. There may not be available sound system so he or she should be comfortable speaking in a loud voice or using a megaphone. Because of the open space, he might also need an assistant even if its just a small group.
- Verify with all attendees their transportation arrangement. If there are people who can carpool then that can save you on transportation expense. Or if everyone can agree to leave at the same time with just one batch travelling, then that will cut your transportation arrangement by half already, instead of having two trips or two batches
- For executives and managers who will be joining, as much as possible they should join only during the times that they are required so as not to waste their ‘executive time’. Remember that their work hours should be maximized as much as possible with ‘executive work’ that should be done in the office.
- Apart from the teambuilding activities, remember to incorporate other games as well so that the participants will warm-up and open up to each other better.
- The best activities are those wherein the realizations and learnings can come from the participants and not like a lecture type wherein the facilitator will give all the insights.
- Remember to prepare all the logistics as well. While it may be easier to get a pen or paper when you run out of them, special items needed for your activities may be more difficult to find outdoors.
Most importantly it is the support of all the employees and management that is needed to be able to achieve the objectives of the teambuilding activities. Like any other employee development program, teambuilding activities are investments on employee’s personal and professional growth. Everyone must realize the importance and the value that these activities can bring to their company. And of course, all of the learnings that they have received in these activities should be applied in their day-to-day office work.
