Beginner's Guide to Music Festivals

In the past decade, the tradition of music festivals in the United States has grown exponentially.  It is now possible to find music festivals in every part of the country, which feature every type of music imaginable.  There are many things to think about when deciding to go to a music festival.

Assuming you have not already decided on a festival to attend, you should consider many things when choosing one.  First, decide if you want to go to a festival close to home or if you want to travel.  Many bigger festivals are now held in rural venues that must be traveled to.  Festivals also vary in length, so it is important to decide how many days of music you would like to see and if you would rather camp or stay in hotels.  Prices for tickets to music festivals also vary.  Some are free, while others can be quite expensive, so be sure to choose a festival that you can afford.  Weekend festivals sometimes allow concert goers to purchase tickets for one day or for all of them so look into this as well.

After deciding on a festival, it is probably a good idea to get tickets as soon as possible.  There are several reasons to do this.  First, festivals often sell out, so you do not want to be stuck without a ticket or have to pay a scalper outrageous fees.  Also, tickets to music festivals are often cheaper if you buy them earlier.  This encourages attendees to buy tickets sooner.

Before attending the festival, be sure to look at the details regarding the rules of the festival.  These will vary from event to event.  You should find out what is allowed inside the venue grounds.  For instance, some festivals will allow concert goers to bring alcohol and food into the venue, while others will not.  Other things to note would be if campfires or pets are allowed.  Looking at the rules and regulations for the festival will ensure that you do not run into any trouble and that your experience is a good one.

Lastly, you should make a list and ask people who have been to the festival before, if you can, about what you should bring.  For instance, if there is a river to swim in near the festival, it would stink to forget a swimsuit.  Or if you burn easily, it would be a shame to forget suntan lotion.

Going to festivals is an exciting experience.  So have lots of fun, but travel safely.
