Whether in the real world or in the cyber world, there are business and work opportunities that are purely phony. While it is much easier to spot one in the real world, you can still protect yourself from scammers who lurk online and get away with the products or services you worked hard for.
To check whether a business is a legit opportunity or just a con, here are some things you can do.
- As they say, some things are too good to be true. Be wary of online jobs offering unbelievable rates and income. Chances are, they are indeed unbelievable because they are inexistent. Do evaluate if such offer of earning thousand of dollars in a week is realistic. Online businesses and job opportunities, as with other business, have to be an established and really growing business before it can give a flattering income.
- Money talk. While even in legitimate businesses there are problems that are encountered when it comes to money matters or payments, what’s important is that these are relayed to you at all times. Even at the start of your working relationship, settle all issues concerning mode of payment, frequency of payment, and rates. Should there be any changes, communicate immediately to maintain the level of trust.
- Knowledge about the industry or business. Scammers are sometimes caught by work at home ob providers when they are unable to communicate clearly and when they seem to know very little about the project they are asking you to do. If someone contacts you about photography work or writing projects, and yet the ‘boss’ doesn’t seem to know what a DSLR is or talks in broken English, this should be an area of concern because how would he be able to monitor or gauge your performance if he doesn’t know how to measure yours properly.
- Check the contact details. While some work at home job opportunities invite candidates or new employees to their office for screening or contract-signing, communication for most work at home jobs are done online, whether thru Skype, chat or email. Try to get as much contact information so when one mode of communication gets cut-off, you have other ways of contacting them. This works both ways though, have your employer get hold of your other contact details for other communication options.
Do not grab all the attractive and seemingly lucrative business or work opportunity without trusting your instinct. Sometimes, you just need to see what is obvious so you can run away from those offers that will just cause you headache in the future. There are people who have gotten away with other people’s work, time, and effort and there are those who are still online looking for unsuspecting, and uninformed, victims.
On the other hand, when you’ve gotten yourself a legitimate business opportunity or work, be sure to deliver what is expected of you (or maybe even more) because similar with any business relationship, your work may turn into a long-term and enriching working partnership for both you and your employer.
