Between colleagues, schoolmates, couples, and most of all, for families, sports activities are considered one of the best bonding activities where everyone can have fun, grow together, and discover more about each other. While it is important to be competitive in sports to be able to win, sports between family members are purely for fun, recreation, physical improvement, and is about teamwork and support for each other.
There are sports that strictly require a specific age for you to join (I guess no one would allow a 10 year old kid join a rugby team), but there are sports where the little ones, tweeners, and mom and dad can all join in.
* Basketball
o Who doesn’t love basketball? Even mom will be proud to have her little girl shoot a hoop. You can also have jerseys for the whole family and feel the ‘team’ spirit even more. It is not as physically strenuous, and you would be able to have fun and fool around as you block, pass to your team mate, or get that 3-point shot.
* Swimming
o While swimming can be very relaxing, you can challenge and inspire each other as you race in the pool. Perfect during summer, throw a little barbeque in the backyard and get ready for hours of fun in the sun.
o Pool Volleyball – Why not push it a little more? Put up a net and watch each others back – literally. Playing volleyball in the pool will guarantee loads of laughter from everyone.
* Want extreme?
o Mountain Climbing
The feeling of accomplishing something as a team, as a whole family is really inspiring. While it may be challenging, this is the perfect opportunity for each and everyone to take on planning, strategy, cooperation, and teamwork. If family members are all grown-up and have the right safety guidelines they can follow, this is an activity that will allow everyone to reach the top – literally.
o Mountain Biking
Even the little ones can enjoy the scenic beauty and fresh air when the whole family goes mountain biking. For lesser stress, not just for the kids but for everyone, maybe especially mom, kids can opt for the easier trail.
So have that camera ready (make sure you have a tripod, no one will be available to manually take shots), get some towels, and be ready to have fun as you play. You may be able to discover that aside from the occasional squabble (or frequent), or rare brawls (or not!), little sister and big brother can show their support and cheer you on as you play. Also, like in any other sport, be conscious about the safety guidelines you have to follow before engaging in these sports. This is a great time to encourage everyone to be physically active, and instead of being lured to other vices.
And what’s best about playing sports with your family? Grabbing that snack of course! When everyone’s tired and hungry, there’s that delicious pizza mom made, or simply call Domino’s and have one delivered! Now, that’s real good family bonding on overtime.
