Decoupage is literally the art of cutting and pasting. All you need is white glue (Modge Podge is best), scissors, paper (clippings, gift wrap, photographs, etc), and a clear top coat (such as clear spray paint, varnish, or sealer). A brayer or popsicle stick is not necessary but highly recommended as well.
First, choose your pictures and the items you want to adhere them to. The possibilities are endless. You can decoupage pictures/decorative paper onto boxes, furniture, plastic, metal... almost anything! Let's say you want to make a keepsake box out of an old jewelry box and an old photograph. Make sure the jewelry box is clean and dry. Apply an even amount of glue or Modge Podge to the back of the photograph and place it wherever you would like it on the jewelry box.
Starting from the middle, working toward the edges, apply gentle but firm pressure so the photo adheres to the jewelry box. Make sure to get all air bubbles out! You can use your fingers to do this, but using a brayer or the edge of a popsicle stick works much better! Any glue that seeps out the side can be removed while still wet with a slightly soap damp washcloth. Allow it to dry overnight. In the morning, apply a top coat of Modge Podge. Let it dry about an hour. Then apply your top clear coat as many times as possible to make the picture's edges blend in with the surface of the jewelry box. Let dry in between every coat. That's all there is to it!
You can also use other items to glue to the box. Confetti, origami, and little toy figurines are just a few ideas of things you can add. And it doesn’t have to be a keepsake box either. You can use decoupage on necklaces, cups, and other decorative items. This is a great craft idea for adults and kids that doesn’t involve a lot difficulty.
