Your Guide to Cheap Wines

For some people, drinking wine is limited to special events and occasions. There are some though on the other hand that drinking wine and spirits is just like drinking bottled water (with increased tolerance to its ‘effects’ of course). If this is the case, a regular supply of wine should be made available. The fancier wines of course are brought out during special events but on any other day (maybe ‘every day’), the cheaper wines will do.

But cheap wines don’t always and necessarily mean that you can just grab anything that’s priced less. There are things that you should still consider so that drinking alcoholic beverages and spirits will always be pleasurable whether they’re Moet or well, not Moet.

•    Savory – While most cheap wines are a little bit on the sweeter side, there are some with a little bit more acidity in them. If you are buying cheap wines for daily consumption, opt for the more savory ones so they would still taste special and not just as regular and as sweet as strawberry or apple juice. Find ones that has more structure into it.
•    Drinkability - Balance and harmony should be present to wine will go down smoothly. The true test of a wine being drinkable or acceptable is only known when, well, its contents are gone. IN buying cheap wines then, it is important that you get those that are in the same category of your favorite and more expensive wines. While there are very noticeable differences between a  cheeseburger and a Big Mac, both are still edible.
•    Identity – When you know where they came from, you’d have an idea how they are. The same is true even in cheap wines. Manufacturers have the same standards of quality (or lack thereof) in their product ranges. One manufacturer would have a taste that is distinct from all others. This is important in choosing which cheap wines to buy.
•    Taste – You don’t need to finish the whole bottle before you realize that the wine tastes great (or worst, wait for the aftertaste). Just one sip and you’ll know whether it is a good buy.

Buying cheap wines shouldn’t be a punishment, nor should you be an expert in wine notes or wine tasting to ‘get’ it. Just remember these few tips and you may just find a great-tasting but cheap wine in your hands – maybe just about everyday.

Also, consider your pairings. While the wine may taste good separately, they way you’re pairing it may not be the best and it can affect how you perceive the wine. It works vice-versa of course, a wine that you feel doesn’t taste great, look for the perfect food pair and you might just raise your appreciation for this new wine. Wines are destined to be paired, and it’s not just about pairing it with food, it’s also about pairing it with the right occasion and event, and then you may just see how special this new wine can be.
