Successful sales professionals will tell you that it is not easy to work in sales. All those client requirements and demands can really test your professionalism and skills. However, it is not without its perks. Sales professionals get basic salary, incentives and commissions that can go well up to six digits.
If you are eyeing your way to that corner office as a successful sales professional, then follow these tips :
- Keep your motivation and never lose sight of your goals. In any field, it is important that you enjoy what you are doing and that you are looking forward to a career goal. Be honest about them and talk about it with your boss or interviewer (if you are still applying). They will surely remember you as someone who is determined to succeed when you tell them what it is you are aspiring for in the future – whether becoming a sales director, or whether financial security for you and your family.
- Learn as much as you can. Be observant and talk to other people who are in sales especially those who are successful in sales. Look at him or her as your mentor as you go through your journey in the field of sales. Join negotiations or client meeting to know how to go around the difficulties in closing a deal. Make everyday a training day to be better in your field.
- Be an initiator. Whether at sales-related activities or not, widen your network and your knowledge by being a leader in every opportunity that may arise. Remember that as a sales professional, a closed deal will never (or maybe rarely) come to you. You will be the one to initiate the sale and work on it until the end.
- Do not take your previous work experience for granted. Whether it’s a desk job or a part-time job, all of your previous work experience will help you better understand people, thus all customers, because ‘everyone’ are potential customers. Previous colleagues and acquaintances also forms part of the network you will need to succeed in sales.
- If you have international exposure, that can also help you in dealing with all types of people. Knowledge of other cultures will truly help and get you more credibility and trust.
- “It’s not what you know, but who you know” is a ‘method’ that works in all aspects when it comes to sales. Your level of influence and your clout can be determined by who you have worked with – those people you ‘rub elbows with’.
But just like in any other career, it takes passion to truly succeed and do well in your chosen field. IN inspirational talks, people note that Bill Gates and Donald Trump are more passionate talking about computers and real estate – and this is the same passion that they apply at work that’s why they’re successful.
It is important to love your work, and as a sales person, you should also have that credibility and integrity that can work for you in the long haul.
