Types of Contact Lenses
Compared to eye glasses, more and more people are switching to contact lenses because of comfort and because it is also considered fashionable. For those who are suffering from eye problems such as far or short-sightedness, or presbyopia or astigmatism, there are contact lenses best-suited for your needs.
Eye problems have been more prevalent because more and more hours are spent in front of the TV and computer. Some read books even if the lighting is not adequate while there are some still who inherit eye problems. According to studies, more women suffer from eye problems compared to men).
There are different types of contact lenses being sold, and they are:
- Disposable contacts – these contact lenses are made just for 24-hour use for only a day. Those who wear this type of contacts prefer the ease of use of these lenses since they do not have to regularly maintain or clean them. This type is also best for people who have very sensitive eyes and may be allergic when they use cleaning solutions when they use regular lenses.
- Soft Contact Lenses – made from soft polymer-plastic material with just the perfect amount of water, these lenses are very soft and is considered to be more comfortable thank other types of lenses. They only have a limited time for use as they would not be able to maintain their texture when use is prolonged.
- Toric lenses – contacts specifically for those who suffer from astigmatism.
- Rigid Gas Permeable lenses – Because of better quality and material, these are preferred by those who like ‘regular’ lenses unlike their soft and disposable counterparts. For those who have a more serious condition of astigmatism, this is the type of lens to use.
- Special contact lenses
- Bifocal contact lenses – lenses created specifically for those who have presbyopia. This is also a soft type of lens, making it very comfortable to use.
- Colored lenses – AS the name implies, they come in different colors and are preferred by those who use them for fashion more than anything else.
- Theatrical contact lenses
- UV-blocking contacts
FreshLook and Acuvue are probably the two most popular brands because of their quality and durability. There are other equally good brands though available in optical shops. If you want to compare them, do not compare based on price alone but also based on the quality and if it is the lens best-suited to correct your eye problem.
But similar though to eye glasses, you should monitor your eye health when wearing lenses. While some may help, you might have mistakenly chosen one that causes harm to your eyes (especially when you have very sensitive eyes, opt for glasses instead. There are pills that you can take as well to improve your overall eye health.
It is important also that you wash your hands before putting your contact lenses on. But most of all, check with your doctor for any other instruction before heading off to the optical shop.
