Different Categories of Dance

Dancing has been around for many decades. Starting from classical dance to ballet to modern-day krumping styles of dance (and all those you see in Dancing With The Stars), dancing has evolved but it still captures the heart, and feet, of all people from all ages.

Dancing is a very entertaining form of art – and since it’s called art, there are different categories and form of dance which are entirely different from the ones you do inside your room or with your friends at the club.

Dancing has been around for many decades. Starting from classical dance to ballet to modern-day krumping styles of dance (and all those you see in Dancing With The Stars), dancing has evolved but it still captures the heart, and feet, of all people from all ages.

Apart from the physical benefits, people love dance for different reasons. And depending on those reasons, people focus on a certain type or category of dance they fall in love with.

While doing it freestyle on the club is already fun, there are different types of dance that you should be familiar with.

•    Electronic dance – Jumpstyle, Hip-hop dance, Popping, Krumping, House Dance
o    This type of dance has evolved and can be mostly seen on street dancing or on clubs. These are high energy and fast move dances that are popular amongst most young dancers.

•    Ballroom dance – Waltz, Tango, Viennese Waltz, Foxtrot, Quickstep, Waltz, Tango, Slow Foxtrot 
o    These classical dances are also categorized under dance sport because most competitions around the globe are being done according to standards of these types of dance.

•    Latin dance – Mambo, Rumba, Cha-cha-cha, Samba, Jive, Paso Doble, Salsa, Rueda, Bachata, Argentine tango
o    Our Latin friends surely know how to heat up and spice up the dance floor. With sultry moves and fiery music, Latin dance is popular around the world across all ages and all races. 

•    Swing dance - Modern Jive, Balboa, East Coast Swing, West Coast Swing
o    These are fast dances and are accompanied by equally lively and energetic music.

•    Line dance
o    Dancing in a straight line, Line dance is always fun for get-togethers and for breaking the ice and is truly inviting for everyone to just get on the dance floor.

•    Ballet
o    Ballet has always held its class and elegance to be one of the premiere form of dance

•    Belly dancing
o    This sultry dance is a sensual dance – from the music to the costume (where a body-baring costume is required), everything about belly dancing is enough to make you sweat

•    Pole dancing
o    More of a form of exercise, pole dancing is a great way to have fun while at the same time, let you become more flexible and increase your upper body strength.

Other types of dance are: Historical dance, Folk dance, Disco dance, Hustle, and Novelty dance.

What’s most important in all kinds of dance is that you do it with passion and with vibrancy. It is important that you enjoy dancing and let it shine through your steps, your moves, and your smile as you go through the entire routine. Whether you want to be classical or modern, dancing enables people to be expressive. And whether for fun or as a career, choose the kind of dance that will let you express yourself and your freedom.
