Article Writing Tips

A good writer needs to follow several simple but very effective tips that will affect the quality of the content produced.

Preparatory work and following up are just as essential, as writing the articles. The medium that will be receiving the finalized piece of work will also affect the type of article, the writing style and its length.

Get Prepared

Before you start writing, you should have a clear idea about what you want to say. Sit down and think about it.

Try to have a small plan that includes bullet points about the important topics to include in the article. Writing down and structuring your ideas can be very beneficial in terms of knowing what you want to say and how you want to say it.

Start Writing and Stay Focused

Begin writing on the basis of the plan you have just drafted. Try to get rid of all distractions. Many writers find it difficult to concentrate because of the little things that keep on coming up during the work process.

Write without editing. Let your thoughts flow free. You will edit the piece once you have finished working on it. Trying to come up with the greatest opening line will take a lot of time and will be efficient very rarely.

Write the way you feel the article. Trying to mimic a great writer that you like will only result in something superficial and fake. The best pieces of writing are honest, sincere and personal.

Focus on grammar and vocabulary. Try to avoid mistakes, long sentences and redundancies. Stop writing once you have said everything. There is no need to make the article ‘prettier’ by adding large descriptive chunks of text that contribute nothing to the overall development of the story.

Forget About It!

Many writers commit one grave mistake – they start editing as soon as they finish writing. Adopting this strategy signifies that various imperfections will be overlooked.

Start working on the article as early, as possible. Waiting for the last moment before the deadline will typically result in something mediocre and dissatisfactory.

When you finish writing, go for a walk or go to bed. Let the article stay unattended over night. Once you go back to it, you will be examining the piece of work from a fresh perspective.

Some of the greatest writers read out loud what they have just written. Hearing the words and the flow of each sentence reveals a lot about the structure of the text. Very often, writers are capable of spotting mistakes when reading their articles out loud.

When in doubt, let somebody else read it. A friend or a colleague will be distanced from that piece of work and will thus be capable of offering you impartial and unbiased opinions.

Let Go of the Rules

Some of the best pieces of writing result from the experiments of writers. It will be beneficial to forget about the rules every now and then.

If you feel strongly about a certain approach, forget about traditional article structure and styling and trust your senses. Give it a try and if you are unhappy with the results, you can start all over again.
